Berkshire Hathaway is the firm run by Warren Buffett. Better to call it a "conglomerate", meaning it has a wide array of companies as subsidiaries. Mr. Buffett places a premium on telling the truth, whether it be good or bad. He has also, in the course of 60+ years of investing, managed to make a small pile of cash, on the order of over 10 BILLION dollars. His company has majority ownership is small companies like GEICO, and major positions in companies like American Express and Coca-Cola. Does he buy stock instead of mutual funds? Yes, but he has been doing it for many years and believes in paying a fair price for a wonderful company. His annual reports are worth reading if you ever choose to become a serious investor yourself.
