I totally agree with Lauren, you don't want to offend somebody's financial state but at the same time you can learn from them.

It's also important to know whether the person you're talking to has the same money personality as you do. If you're a natural spender and you're talking to a natural saver, you're both going to have a different perspective on money and so if they give you advice that worked for them, it probably won't work as well for you because you view things differently than they do.

Its probably a good idea not to boast about money or your possesions but to try to work through your budget or money problems in order to get the best result.
